How to Play Nonograms
lightbulb The Basics
Nonograms (also called Picross or Griddlers) are logic puzzles where you reveal a hidden picture by filling cells in a grid. Each row and column has number clues that tell you which cells to fill.
Each clue number represents a group of consecutive filled cells. Multiple numbers mean multiple groups, separated by at least one empty cell. For example, clues 3 1 2 mean: 3 filled cells, gap, 1 filled cell, gap, 2 filled cells.
A clue of 0 means the entire row or column is empty. The order of clue numbers matches the order of groups from left-to-right (rows) or top-to-bottom (columns).
touch_app Controls
Fill a cell: Click or tap a cell in Fill mode (default). Filled cells appear as solid squares.
Mark as empty: Switch to Cross mode and click a cell to mark it with an X, indicating you know it's empty.
Erase: Click a filled or crossed cell to clear it back to unknown.
Switch modes: Use the Fill/Cross buttons below the grid, or right-click to cross.
tips_and_updates Tips & Strategies
- 1. Start with full rows/columns. If a clue equals the row length (e.g., "10" on a 10-wide grid), fill the entire row. If the clue is 0, mark it all as X.
- 2. Use the overlap technique. When a clue is more than half the row length, the middle cells must be filled regardless of where the group starts.
- 3. Mark known empties. Crossing out cells you know are empty helps narrow down possibilities and prevents mistakes.
- 4. Work row and column clues together. Solving one row gives you information for columns, and vice versa. Alternate between them.
- 5. Count carefully. Add up all clue numbers plus minimum gaps β if this equals the row length, there's only one possible arrangement.
